If you’re in need of a gray trash container or a blue recyclable container, you must call 311 and make a request. Don’t rely on your neighbors to request one for you. Each individual resident must make his or her own request. Also, if your trash/recyclables were not picked up, call 311 and request a pick-up. Sanitation crews will only respond to individual requests.

Just about everyone recognizes the universal symbol to identify recyclable materials.

While you may recognize the recycle symbol, you may not know that the number at the center of the symbol identifies the type of recyclable material used to make the packaging. It indicates that not all recyclable packaging is created equal.

At the center of the symbol is a number from 1 to 7. Each number represents the type of material used to make the packaging.

It is important to note that some of the materials cannot be easily recycled because they release toxins harmful to our environment and to our bodies. Don’t be fooled by the recycle symbol — look closer at the number inside.

Packaging with the number 1 or number 2 is the most recycle friendly.

Try to avoid packaging with a 3 or a 6. This type of packaging has the potential to leach toxins into our foods and environment.

Look for alternatives. Buy eggs in paper cartons. Skip the red and blue plastic party cups. Buy a cheap set of utensils (garage sale?) and use those for parties instead of plastic plates and utensils.

Should you recycle the plastic tops and caps with the other packaging?

Well, no. Lids are not typically made of the same plastic as the packaging. And in the recycling business, the two types of plastic can not be mixed. Something about contamination. The lids and caps can jam recycling machinery and containers with lids still on may not compact properly.

So throw those lids and tops into the trash.

Congratulations to Tony Medaris, whose beautiful home at 1606 Montreal Ave. received the Yard of the Month for March. It’s hard to maintain a beautiful yard throughout the winter, but Tony has managed to do so. If you haven’t made your way to his area of Montreal Avenue, you owe it to yourself to drive or walk by. In recognition of his accomplishment, Tony will receive a $25 gift certificate to Calloway’s Nursery.

If your trash or recyclables weren’t picked up today because you had your carts in the wrong place, don’t fret. Call 311. Mary Nix, Dallas’ director of Sanitation Services, says trucks will swing by tomorrow. For the next couple of weeks, the City is giving everyone a second chance for pickup.

good news about odd fellows

Good Neighbor Phil Leven checked out the special use permit issued to Odd Fellows Hall at 1808 S. Hampton Road back in the 1970s. As it turns out, the only possible uses for the building would be another Odd Fellows Hall or “a great little church.” The bottom line: We don’t have to worry about having a fast-food restaurant or an adult book store move into Hampton Hills anytime soon.

The first HHNA Happy Hour was a great success! About 20 residents gathered at the home of Cliff and Jon Garinn to enjoy libations from mixologist Cliff, lively conversation and lots of laughs. It was a perfect way to end the work week and the month. Next month’s event will be hosted by Mary Maddox and Ted Thomas on Friday, March 26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at 1611 Hollywood Ave.

Mr. Garinn:

As follow-up to our phone conversation today, please be advised that the collection point for the 1300 and 1400 blocks for Hollywood will be collected in the alley. We will notify each affected customer on Monday, March 1 that both recycling and refuse will be collected in the alley. Just in time for their OneDAY which is Tuesdays.

There are no other waste collection point of service changes that affect the Hampton Hills Neighborhood Association area.

president’s letter to delia jasso

Dear Councilmember Jasso,

As president of the Hampton Hills Neighborhood Association, I have heard from many residents who are unhappy with the decision to move their trash pickup from the alley to the curb. They can’t understand why this should have to happen, especially since they have enjoyed alley pickup for many years. If the carts take up too much room in the narrow alleys and trucks have a difficult time maneuvering, we deserve a chance to fix the problem before imposing such a sweeping change and perhaps a physical hardship on some residents.

Not only are the carts difficult to roll across grass, in some instances, trying to roll them across damaged driveways and sidewalks could prove treacherous. As you well know, Hampton Hills has many problematic sidewalks and driveway entrances. Moreover, our front yards are terraced, and even trying to roll a cart up or down the slightest incline could be dangerous in certain conditions.

Please, add me to the list of concerned residents who want to retain alley pickup where possible.
