calloway’s tips for summer gardeners

Planting a Butterfly garden is fun for all ages. First, choose a location with plenty of sun and protection from strong winds. Add a supply of dark rocks or mass of dark pebbles to collect the morning sun for the butterflies to rest and warm up. Sink a container full of sand or gravel into the ground and keep it moist. This will serve as a resting spot for some to drink and obtain minerals.

Attracting butterflies to your garden is easy. Select foliage plants as food for the larvae or caterpillar, and flowering plants to provide nectar for adults. Butterflies are attracted by fragrance, flower-shape and color. They are mostly active in mid and late summer, so you should make sure that you have lots of nectar-rich plants and flowers blooming by then. If you plant large sections of flowers of the same color, it will make it easier for them to find your garden. You should plant flowers that will bloom at different times of the year and ones that bloom even at different times of the day and night, this way, you will always have something in bloom and they will always be attracting butterflies.

Calloway’s will offer a free clinic in every store on June 12 at 10:15 a.m. to provide more details about planting a butterfly garden.

When summer days grow shorter, many vegetable crops store more sugar and have better flavor than spring-grown crops. Once established, weeding, watering and tending will all take place in slightly cooler, less humid conditions.

In the dog days of summer, prepare soil much like in the spring. Add at least 3 inches of organic compost and 3 inches of expanded shale to the garden. Select vegetables you like and choose from transplants or seeds. Apply organic fertilizer or timed-release plant food. Remember to continue feeding your garden on a regular schedule. Complete the planting by adding 2 to 3 inches of mulch to maintain moisture, help prevent weeds and to maintain moderate soil temperatures.

Vegetables for a fall garden include tomatoes, peppers, snap beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots and lettuce. Keep your garden well watered until fall rains begin. Once everything is planted, sit back and enjoy a second growing season!

Calloway’s will host a free clinic in every store on fall vegetable gardens on July 3 at 10:15 a.m.
